Remediation - Site Examples
Tonolli Metals Superfund Site
The Tonolli Metals Superfund site contained soil contaminated
with highly weathered #4 Fuel Oil at concentrations low enough to go directly
to Phase II of the Phased Approach. Warm season grasses were planted with a
nurse crop of a cool season grass for soil stabilization. Hydroseeding and
cultipacking were used for plant stand establishment. Both the cool and warm
season grasses developed as expected with no inhibition from petroleum
hydrocarbons which have significantly decreased (P=.05) in all treatment cells
except one.
The cost savings of using this approach was realized over traditional hauling
and disposal costs with the additional sampling and analysis included.
